The Qualities of Time

 

Time has its own qualities, many aspects of which are very complex. Modern science has proven most of the physical aspects of time. For example, Harvard University did a study that found enzymes were highest between 10am and 2pm. This is the Pitta time of day in which Ayurveda recommends the largest meal.

Ayurveda is the science of life. It teaches us to become aware of ourselves in relation to our environment and the world around us. We need to be aware of the quality of time, and live accordingly for the highest level of health. It is important to learn when to eat, according to natural time, when to exercise, when to meditate, when to make love, when to do aerobic style yoga, when to do slower paced restorative yoga. In this way we allow time to work for us instead of against us. We align ourselves and tune into Time.

Before yoga is taught, the teacher should consider the time, surroundings, age, nature of employment, energy and strength of the person and his power of comprehension. The practice of yoga must be done by a learned person who has self control. (Yoga Rahasya of Nathamuni, sloka 30)
